headquarters in New York.

school project, one that Ben Gorham, the
founder of Stockholm-based Byredo, riff ed on for his Rare Byrds
of a Feather collection, coming out in September. With designer
Christian Halleröd, he created 10 one-off wooden aviaries, each
inspired by a species of South Asian bird. The sculptural pieces
complement a series of the brand’s Blueprint bags painted with
bold Rorschach-style prints of bird feathers. The line also includes
Swarovski Optik binoculars, limited to 15 pairs, and other bird-

NLIKE many of its Hudson
Valley neighbors, Kingston
is no hamlet: The city,
which sits 91 miles north of
Manhattan, boasts a population of
23,000 and a newfound shot of urban
cool, thanks to the arrival of the
43-room Hotel Kinsley. Studio Robert
McKinley (Montauk’s The Surf Lodge)
has handled the renovation and design
of four historic buildings that will
launch sequentially over the next 12
months. First up is 301 Wall Street,
just opened in a former 19th-century
bank and featuring a crisp, Europe-
at-midcentury look. “We’re defi nitely
moving away from the typical upstate
whistle call—antlers, buff alo plaid,
reclaimed wood,” says the design
fi rm’s founder, Robert McKinley, who
has introduced Scandinavian-style
lighting, vintage Moroccan kilims,
mini-fridges from Smeg and sleek
walnut desks fabricated in nearby
Red Hook. Taavo Somer of Freemans
in New York City is part of the team
behind the open-kitchen restaurant,
which will serve dishes like strip
steak and snail-shaped lumache pasta
