At 3:15:16 Coordinated
Universal Time on July
21, 1969, Buzz Aldrin
became the second
person to set foot on
the moon, following
Apollo 11 commander
Neil Armstrong. On
Aldrin’s wrist was the
first earthly timepiece
(Armstrong left his
in the lunar module) to
be worn on another
astronomical body: the
Omega Speedmaster,
which NASA selected
for missions after it
survived a battery of
punishing tests. To
mark the moon land-
ing’s 50th anniversary,
Omega has released
a limited-edition
watch that captures
the enterprising spirit
and timeless design
of Aldrin’s 1969 model
while introducing
innovations like a
patent-pending gold
alloy that resists fading
and an antimagnetic
caliber. For details
see Sources, page 102.
