Men of the 51st Highland Division cross the
drawbridge of Fort-de-Sainghin, near the city of Lille,
close to the French-Belgian border. Although the
Maginot Line did not extend across the Belgian
border, upon their arrival the BEF set about
digging in and fortifying their positions.
This series of pill boxes, trenches and
anti-tank defences were later
dubbed the ‘Gort Line’.
