re-created a recruitmentandpublicitydriveundertakenin 1934bythe
Cavalry Regiment of theBritishArmy.
Nicknamed the RoyalScotsGreysdueto thecolourof theirhorses,
the 1930s riders wouldtravelaroundtheCairngormsto boosttroop
numbers. Eighty-five yearslater,contemporaryridersrepresentedthe
historic Greys from theRoyalScotsDragoonGuardsandRoyalEngineers.
The new trek served asa battlefieldstudyto testthephysicalendurance
and riding skills of today’ssoldiersandto increaseawarenessof northeast
Scotland’s military history.

ArrivingattheHighlanders’MuseumatFortGeorgeon 17 July,the
ridersmetvisitorsin bothmodernandperioduniform,includingfrom
the5thBattalion,SeaforthHighlanders.Thegroupfinallydismounted
atKinlossBarrackswherethehorseswerethenrestedbeforebeing
transportedbacktotheirregiments.
KirstinMacKay,directoroftheHighlanders’Museumsaid,“Wewere
pleasedtohostthishistoricre-enactmentride.It bringshistoryaliveand
highlightsthecontributionoftheHighlandsoldierstotheBritishArmy.”
CheshirehasanimpressivemilitaryhistorywithChesteritselfhaving
itsoriginsasa Romanfort.Thecityis nowthelocationforthe
CheshireMilitaryMuseum,whichis locatedat A Blockin Chester
Castle.It coversthehistoryof fourBritishArmyregimentsconnected
withthecounty:theCheshireRegiment,CheshireYeomanry,3rd
Carabiniersandthe5thRoyal InniskillingDragoonGuards.
ThemuseumcovershistoricalperiodsbeginningwithRomantimes
butthemajorityof theexhibitionroomscoverconflictsfromthe
17th-20thcenturies.ThisincludesCheshire’srolesin theBattleof
Dettingen,theSevenYears’War,SecondBoerWar,WorldWarsand
21stcenturyconflicts.
Artefactsof interestincludea penthatwasusedto witnessthe
Japanesesurrenderto Alliedforcesin 1945,a regimentalcolourfrom
theBattleof MonsandseveralVictoriaCrosses.Thereis a substantial
collectionof silverwarebelongingto theCheshireRegiment.The
museumalsohostsexhibitionswithitslatestbeingRebuildingLives.
Thisexploresthestoryof woundedCheshiresoldiersthroughout
history.Openingtimesaredailybetween10am-5pm.

form the Royal Scots Dragoon Guard

county’s Crown Court
