the long skinny strip
sets to minimize
stretching.
- Referring to Diagram 3, sew
together 10 A segments and nine B
segments to make front unit. The unit
should be 19^1 ⁄ 2 × 111 ⁄ 2 " including seam
allowances. Referring to Diagram 4,
sew together 10 B segments and nine
A segments to make back unit. - Fold front unit in half crosswise,
press lightly to mark vertical
centerline, and unfold. Repeat with
back unit. - Fold solid tan 6^1 ⁄ 2 × 131 ⁄ 2 " rectangle in
half horizontally and vertically; press
lightly to mark centerlines and unfold.
Use a fabric pen to mark horizontal
centerlines in seam allowances of
short edges. - Aligning vertical centerlines, join
front and back units to prepared solid
tan rectangle (Diagram 5).
7. Center Step 5 unit atop stabilizer
or batting 23×31" piece (Diagram 6);
baste. (For details, see Complete Quilt,
page 103.) Quilt as desired; press.
Designer Kristyne Czepuryk machine-
quilted a diagonal grid in the front
and back units and parallel lines in the
solid tan rectangle.
8. Trim excess stabilizer or batting
even with fabric edges. Fold unit in
half with right sides together. Align
seams of front and back units; sew side
edges together (Diagram 7). Press
seams open.
9. To shape a flat bottom, at one corner
match marked horizontal centerline
of solid tan rectangle with side seam
(Diagram 7), creating a flattened edge
(Diagram 8). Sew raw edges together.
Repeat with remaining corner. Turn
right side out to make bag body.
ASSEMBLE LINING
- Fold solid tan 19^1 ⁄ 2 × 281 ⁄ 2 " rectangle
in half to make a 19^1 ⁄ 2 × 141 ⁄ 4 " rectangle
(Diagram 9). Sew side edges together,
leaving a 5" opening for turning in
one side.
