How you’re making a difference

Nine Patch Quilt & Fabrics in Nevada, Missouri, started making

pillowcases in 2010 for the Heartland Behavioral Center, an in-house care

center for children. The shop initially donated 151 pillowcases, which were

such a big hit with the kids that the center requested more. While the

volunteers were eager to sew more pillowcases, their fabric stashes were

depleted. In response, the Heartland administration approved a budget

of $6 per pillowcase for fabrics and supplies. Shop owner Erica Skouby

keeps to that amount in making pillowcase kits through a combination

of thrifty shopping and donations. Volunteers in the community

assemble the kits into pillowcases. To date, the center has received 1,345

homemade pillowcases.
