CUT FABRICS


Cut pieces in the following order.

From each cream print and tan print,
cut:
▫ 6—4^7 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 48—2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From each red print and red-orange
print, cut:
▫ 6—4^7 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 15—4^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From each black print, cut:
▫ 6—4^7 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 48—2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From each green print and blue print,
cut:
▫ 6—4^7 ⁄ 8 " squares
▫ 15—4^1 ⁄ 2 " squares
From black tone-on-tone, cut:
▫ 8—3^1 ⁄ 4 ×42" strips for border
▫ 8—2^1 ⁄ 2 ×42" binding strips

ASSEMBLE A BLOCKS
Measurements include^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
allowances. Sew with right sides
together unless otherwise stated.
Press seams in directions indicated
by arrows on diagrams. If no direction
is specified, press seam toward darker
fabric.


  1. Gather six 4^7 ⁄ 8 " squares and twenty-
    four 2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares from one cream or
    tan print, six 4^7 ⁄ 8 " squares and fifteen
    4 1 ⁄ 2 " squares from one red or red-
    orange print, and twenty-four 2^1 ⁄ 2 "
    squares from one black print.

  2. Use a pencil to mark a diagonal line
    on wrong side of cream or tan print
    47 ⁄ 8 " and 2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares and black print
    21 ⁄ 2 " squares.

  3. Layer a marked cream or tan print
    4 7 ⁄ 8 " square atop a red or red-orange
    print 4^7 ⁄ 8 " square. Sew together with
    two seams, stitching^1 ⁄ 4 " on each side
    of marked line (Diagram 1). Cut apart


on marked line. Press open to make
two triangle-squares. Each triangle-
square should be 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
seam allowances. Repeat to make
12 triangle-squares total.


  1. Align a marked cream or tan print
    2 1 ⁄ 2 " square with one corner of a
    red or red-orange print 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square
    (Diagram 2). Sew on marked line.
    Trim excess fabric, leaving^1 ⁄ 4 " seam
    allowance; press open attached
    triangle. Using a second marked cream
    or tan print 2^1 ⁄ 2 " square, repeat with
    adjacent corner. In same manner, add
    marked black print 2^1 ⁄ 2 " squares to
    remaining corners to make a Square-
    in-a-Square unit (Diagram 3). The unit
    still should be 4^1 ⁄ 2 " square including
    seam allowances. Repeat to make
    12 Square-in-a-Square units total.


FINISHED QUILT: 66×78"
