Planningthespacebeneaththepop-upwasan
exerciseinintensity,tightlyprogrammedtomaximise
everymillimetre.Thearchitectshadtoworkmagic
fromminimums,astheyinserteda newkitchenand
stairswithina three-metrewidespace.Tosavespace,
the8mm-steelstaircase,whichleadstothepop-up,
wasfabricatedasonepieceandcranedintoplace.
Danieltookthedayoffworkforthiseventand,with
anequallyexcitedtoddlerbyhisside,watchedit being
manoeuvredintoplace.Thestaircaseissupportedona
cantileveredboxsectioninthewallandfloatsoffthe
ground.Thelightplayinthisareaisa workofart.
Whilespacesintheformerprogrammefunctioned,
theyweren’tbeingusedanddidn’trelatetohow
thefamilylives.Akeydriverintheirreworkingwas
tocapitaliseonlight.Theolddiningroomisnowa
bespokelibrarythathousesthecouple’scollectionof
architecturebooks.Theoriginalkitchenisnowtheir
toddler’sbedroom.Thenewkitchenisthefocusand
wherethefamilyspendsthemajorityoftheirtime.
They’veinstalledrobustmaterialssuitablefortwo
youngboys,butthatembracepatina.
“Thejoineryanddetailoftheinteriorfit-outisas
importantasthearchitecture,”saysKate.“Theinternal
designaddsthatnextlayerofrichness.We’veinvested
wherewethinkit’simportant,whichwethinkisa
sustainableapproach.Wedon’tenvisage replacing
anything – it will outlast us.”
