cityarchitectBillHesson.Goearlyin
themorningtoseelightspillthroughits
wallofwindows.Attheport,you’llfind
theSeafarersBuilding(2 BirchStreet)
designedinthe1960swithbrickand
Mondrian-inspiredpanels.Theformer
hostelis nowoccupiedbyPlato(platocafe.
co.nz)– gofortheexcellentseafood.
Theheritage-listedDentalSchool(at
theUniversityofOtago)is a Corbusian
buildingbyIanReynoldsandgovernment
architectGordonWilson,witha pioneering
glass-curtainfacadeandbrilliantuse
ofcolour(undergoingredevelopment
byJasmax,itsclassicfeaturespreserved).
BesideLeithRiver,theBrutalist
RichardsonBuildingbythelegendary
TedMcCoyhasa facadeoftessellated
concreteandspectacularin-situconcrete
staircase.Butthebestofthelotis
McCoy’sArchwayBuilding(1973).
Itsrakeoftheatresis clearlyarticulated
inthehovering,suspendedform,pillars
holdingupangledconcretepanels with
super-graphicbluenumbers.

TheChambersonis anexercisein careful
layering– itsheritageelementslaidbare
withclevermoderninsertionsdesigned
byNikkiWilson.Thecitylocationmakes
foreasywalkingtokey areas.
