The design is essentially a half-courtyard
house, its dark bulk working as an embrace
to create privacy and wrapping around a
puka. Still in its infancy, the tree will mature
to become the focal point as you move
around thehouse– it willalsoforma subtle
barrier totheoriginalhouse.
Cunninghamhasfutureproofedsothe
lower levelcanbeexcavatedandextended
to includetwomorebedroomsanda living
area. Andif Smailcontinuestolivehereinto
the future,thoseviewsshehasadmiredfor
more than 40 yearswillremainrightwhere
she askedCunninghamtoputthem– very
comfortablyin sight.“It’smyownspaceand
it’s private,”shesays.“It’sa simpledesign
with everythingI wanted.”
