AWI is proud to support the very
best Australian designers. Through
collaborations with these leading
designers, AWI and the Woolmark
brand are fostering fashion innovation
and showcasing the best qualities
of Australian Merino wool to the
world. Of the designers we currently
support I personally like Gary
Bigeni, Konstantina Mittas, Therese
Rawsthorne, ANT!PODiUM, and
Romance was Born. They create
innovative knits that have next-to-skin
softness on one hand and on the
other hand they are technologically
advanced. For example, Romance

was Born incorporates complicated
jacquard patterns into fully fashion
knitwear.”
Speaking of tricky patterns, intarsia
knitting has also become popular
in the rag trade circles. For those
not in the know, intarsia knitting, as
described on http://www.knitting.about.com,
‘is the term used to identify a knitting
project using blocks of colour where
the yarn is not stranded or carried
across the back of the work as is done
in Fair Isle knitting, also known as
stranded knitting. Intarsia is actually a
term that comes from woodworking,
where it refers to inlaying different

colours of wood to make a pattern,
design or picture’.
When it comes to patterns, think again
of Sonia Rykiel as she covered all bases
with her floral, abstract, animal and
tribal patterns. And if that doesn’t grab
you then take to the seas with nautical
stripes in red, white and blue!
So how about colour? Well the
Pantone Color Institute® has titled
the season’s palette ‘Splashes of
Sunshine’ to give you a hint. Their
sunniest colour is ‘Aurora’ and it is
described as ‘reminiscent of the first
glimpse of yellow as the sun begins
to rise over the horizon’. Other warm
