Architect Middle East – August 2019

(Marcin) #1

The filtered, natural light and the shape of the windows
are further complemented by shard like features, such as the
triangulated coloured glass muqarnas, an abstraction of a
traditional decorative corbel that’s often used in traditional
Islamic architecture.
Along the mosque’s triangulated side windows, multilay-
ered abstracted Arabic scripts (an abstraction of a hadith, or
recorded saying of Prophet Muhammad) are also featured.
In addition to its recent recognition from Abdullatif Al
Fozan Award for Mosque Architecture, the KAFD Grand
Mosque was also a finalist for a World Architecture Festival
award under the religious buildings category in 2017.
