TheFamilyStonewereanotheractthatadded
anearthierforceandfervourtothesounds,

Revelaires,TheReligiousSoulsandmanymore
whotouredregionallyandrecordedlargelyfor
tinylabelsorfleetinglyforbiggerones,likeThe
TriumphsforVee-JayorTheFloydFamilySingers
forSavoy.Howeverminorthese45smayhave
seemedatthetime,togethertheyconstitutea
majordiscoveryforanysoulfanregardlessofhis
orherdenomination(orutterlackthereof).And
whileJesusmayremainatthecentreofthesongs
here(thisis gospelafterall),trackslikeJames
Bynum’s“WeAreInNeed”arefarmoreexplicitly
aboutthestruggletofindhispresenceorfollow
histeachingsinsucha troubledworld.OrasThe
FloydFamilySingersputit in“TheSignOfThe
Times”– a possiblyunprecedentedsynthesisof
proto-discoflairandquasi-apocalypticgloom
