DAILY MAIL FOURSOMES

CARA SLOMAN

FATHER and son pair Rod
and Joe Henderson are
celebrating a record run in
The Daily Mail Foursomes
after securing Alnwick a
spot in the last 32.
They went out in the fourth round last year,
but now the Northumberland duo have just
one more knockout match standing between
them and a place in this year’s October
showdown at Slaley Hall.
While three of their matches have been
decided on the last green, in the sixth round
of the world’s largest amateur golf tournament
they took control to comfortably beat Alan
Redhead and Bill Ritchie from Galashiels
3&2 at home. Rod, 62 said: ‘We pegged them
back where they had shots and put them
under pressure. That’s how we got the result.’

KEY: Figure in M column is the match number and the figure un-
der S shows the number of weeks since that number gave a
score draw. Home-away form sequences cover each team’s last
five matches, with the latest result on the right. X = score draw;
O = 0-0 draw. Figures in brackets show percentage of games re-
sulting in a score draw so far. The R column gives the current
form rating of the teams in each match, with the home team’s
rating first. The H-D-A figures are the percentage chance of
home-draw-away. Jack Boulder’s forecast is in the final column.

GREAT BRITAIN’S chances of
success in the men’s road race
at the UCI World Championships
in Yorkshire next month may
have suffered a serious setback
because of an untimely drop in
the official nation ranking table
that will limit them to six,
rather than eight, riders.
Yesterday the UCI website still
ranked Britain in 10th spot, with
the top 10 teams able to field
eight riders on September 29.
But two fine performances
from Michael Morkov, including
a fifth place in last weekend’s
European Championships road
race, will see Denmark
propelled into 10th ahead of a
GB team who will be forced to
cut two riders from their plans.
At the Europeans, Chris Lawless
was the highest British finisher
in 13th, with Mark Cavendish
31st. The UK is hosting its first
UCI World Road Championships
since 1982.

Albon lifted

by Red Bull

RED Bull have promoted
Alexander Albon to race
alongside Max Verstappen for
the remainder of the Formula
One season. The move will see
Pierre Gasly return to race for
Red Bull’s sister team, Scuderia
Toro Rosso, alongside Daniil
Kvyat. A team statement read:
‘The team will use the next nine
races to evaluate Alex’s
performance in order to make an
informed decision as to who will
drive alongside Max in 2020.’

Koepka gets a reaction... and fast!

BROOKS KOEPKA has earned
plenty of admirers in proving
himself the major man in all
senses in recent Grand Slams.
But if his strident views and
actions regarding slow play
lead to ridding us of the curse
of the modern game, it will
prove a greater contribution.
No sooner had the world No 1
said his piece to culprit-in-chief

Bryson DeChambeau than the
PGA Tour announced a
review of its pace of play
policy. Let’s hope
Koepka (right) and
other influential
voices such as Rory
McIlroy keep the
pressure up, to
ensure this review
doesn’t go back

and forth like DeChambeau
over an eight-foot putt.
Meanwhile, Eddie Pepperell
rightly apologised for
calling DeChambeau
a twit. He didn’t take
back his belief,
though, that the
American should
play faster. Which was
also right.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
‘I think we all know what money
means to him.’
Rory McIlroy might not be as
sharp as he’d like on Sundays but
the same certainly doesn’t apply
to his razor wit. What about this
withering takedown of Matt
Kuchar last week, after the tight-
wad American had made the
awful mistake of trying to jibe the
Northern Irishman over money.

Rider, 15, killed

after horse fall

A teenage equestrian star has
died after a horse riding
accident. Iona Sclater, 15, was
pronounced dead at the scene
after falling from her horse at
her home in Abington Pigotts,
Cambridgeshire on Sunday.
Sclater had been selected for
the 2017 and 2019 pony
European Championships.
In a statement yesterday British
Eventing described her as ‘an
exceptionally talented and
dedicated young event rider’.

HO on earth
pictured the
prim and
proper Catri-
ona Matthew
as a high-stakes roller?
You could be forgiven for that
impression following the rather
startling announcement of her
four Solheim Cup wildcards at
Gleneagles yesterday.
Bronte law and Celine Boutier
from France were obvious. But
Suzann Pettersen is currently
ranked 620th in the world having
played precisely two events in 20
months, following the birth of her
son, Herman — missing the
halfway cut both times.
It gets better. The fourth pick is
England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff,
the only player not at the
announcement because she’s
recovering from a minor back
operation, having spent the sum-
mer in almost constant discom-
fort. lest we forget, the eagerly
anticipated 16th edition of the
best event in women’s golf tees off
at the 2014 Ryder Cup venue in a
shade over a month’s time.
What was Matthew thinking?
Europe’s captain smiles broadly.
‘I don’t see either pick as a gam-
ble,’ said the Scot. ‘I am 100 per
cent confident in both picks.’
If truth be told, looking down
the list of alternatives, it does
appear a gamble worth taking in
both instances. Mel Reid would
probably have got the nod if she’d
played well in the last two events
in Britain, but she missed the
cut in both. She has replaced
Pettersen as a vice-captain,
and will step into the team
if Ewart Shadoff doesn’t
prove her fitness. No
one else put forward a
persuasive case.
This European side,
therefore, looks a lot
like some of the early
Ryder Cup teams.
There’s a lot of talent
and personality at the top
of the order and you can’t
imagine they’ll be too far behind
— if at all — going into Sunday’s
singles. But what about those 12
matches — are there heroes
waiting to emerge in the manner

of Eamonn Darcy, Philip
Walton or Phillip Price, to
make the difference?
As for the pick who
will be under most
scrutiny, Matthew
(left) knows Pettersen,
38, as well as anyone.
They were team-mates
in seven Solheim Cup
teams. She knows the
feisty Norwegian brings a
lot of Ian Poulter’s attitude
into the home dressing room.
like Poults, you’ve got to love
Pettersen’s honesty. ‘Obviously
life has changed for the better
with the birth of my son, but the

fact is, I miss golf,’ she said. ‘I
sometimes think I was born for
the Solheim Cup.’
Only three players have contrib-
uted more than her 19 points.
‘My best moments in golf have
come in the Solheim Cup,’ said
the double major champion.
What would she say to the
doubters? ‘Bring it on,’ she replied
without hesitation. ‘I’m not a fool.
I’d have told Beany (Matthew’s
nickname) if I thought I wouldn’t
be ready. I’ll be ready.’
Pettersen was the life and soul
of three winning teams but also
involved in the most unsavoury
incident in the event’s history in

  1. In a tense fourballs match,
    American Alison lee thought a
15-inch putt that was a formality
on the 17th hole had been con-
ceded and picked up her ball.
    An impassive Pettersen stood
her ground, saying no such con-
    cession had been forthcoming.
The hole went to Europe, as did
    that particular match (but not
the trophy). lee was in floods of
    tears. The Americans went nuts.
‘I think we’ve all learned from
    the unfortunate incident and
    moved on,’ said Pettersen yester-
day. But when asked what she
    would do differently, she looked
    non-plussed. Bring it on, indeed.
