Katherine Ryan might have grown
up in Canada, but it was only when
she moved to Britain over a decade
ago that she finally felt at home.
Born and raised in Ontario,
the stand-up made a big splash
on the comedy circuit when she
came to London in her early 20s,
before becoming a regular
on panel shows such
as Would I Lie to
Yo u ?, Mock the
Week and QI.
Because
Ryan loves
life in the

UK so much, she’s always been
desperate to discover if she has a
deeper connection to this country

  • and this week’s episode of Who
Do You Think You Are? gives her
    the chance to find out.

NOBLE AIMS
‘I have always felt like I belonged
in England,’ she explains. ‘I’m
also desperate to prove to my
daughter Violet that I’m from
English stock.
‘Violet was born in London
and speaks the Queen’s English

  • she’s the fancy one. She’s always
    apologising for me in public,
saying things like, “I’m sorry about
    my mother, she’s Canadian.” So
it would be great to find that I’m
    descended from nobility. Violet
    would love that.’

Ryan’s first stop is her
hometown of Sarnia, back in
Canada, where she researches
her mother’s side of the family.
She’s delighted to find common
ground with her four-times
great-grandfather, Matthew
Richey, a Presbyterian ‘saddlebag
preacher’ from Nova Scotia who
travelled around the countryside
on horseback, giving sermons.
‘He spoke on street corners and
outside factories,’ says Ryan. ‘He
was a performer like me in many
ways, so I felt a kinship.
It’s funny to
think you
can be
similar to
someone
who lived
