TV & Satellite Week – 17 August 2019

(Brent) #1
mum Erin, who has grown up
with Vinnie and is now in a
relationship with his best mate,
Dylan (Damien Molony).
Meanwhile, West plays Dr
Chris, an aloof GP who turns up
throughout the series and appears
more interested in scrolling
through his phone than listening
to his patient Vinnie. Like his
character, Gilgun is bipolar, and
he based a lot of the script on his
experience of the condition.

COMEDY WITH HEART
‘When I first started suffering
with depression, my experience
with my NHS GP wasn’t great,’
he reveals. ‘Of course, not all GPs
are like that, but Dr Chris represents
the negligent way that people can
be dealt with.’

However, Gilgun insists he
didn’t want to create a depiction
of the working classes that was
gloomy and miserable.
‘Some of the happiest people
I’ve ever met have got
nothing,’ he says.
‘I want people to feel
like they want to be a
part of our group, to
want to be our friend.’
Shot in Manchester
and on location in
Lancashire, the series
gets underway with
Vinnie embroiled
in a scam to steal
a Shetland pony.
Meanwhile, Erin is furious to
discover that Dylan has once
again been sucked into trouble
by the charismatic Vinnie.

‘Erin is desperate to give her
young son Tyler the opportunities
she never had,’ says Keegan. ‘She’s
working and studying hard and has
ambitions to move away from the
area with Dylan.
But he is constantly
letting her down by
getting involved
with Vinnie.’
Keegan says she
knew instantly that
she wanted to be
part of the show.
‘It’s the craziest
and funniest thing
I’ve ever worked
on,’ says the Our
Girl actress, who also starred in
Tina and Bobby. ‘I’d not really done
comedy, but as soon as I read the
script and found myself laughing

out loud, I knew I wanted to be in it.
There’s nothing quite like it on TV.’
Molony agrees. The Ripper Street
star admits that some of the scenes
came as quite a shock.
‘I’ve done things on this show
that I’ve never experienced before,’
he grins. ‘We had the Shetland pony
scenes in episode one, and the
following week we were filming in
some sewers where I was running
around feeling like Indiana Jones.
My parents would ring up and ask
what I’d been doing that day and I’d
say, “You honestly have NO idea!”’
