Roz negotiates
with client Scott
(inset) this week

Indecent

Sinead Keenan’s stressed

physio makes a big gamble

of her own in Deep Water

Up to her eyes in debt and with
bailiffs knocking at her door,
physiotherapist Roz Toovey was
offered a way out of her financial
crisis when wealthy client Scott
offered her £5,000 to sleep with
him, as ITV drama Deep Water
started last week.
The Lakeland-set thriller
follows friends Lisa (Anna Friel),
Kate (Rosalind Eleazar) and Roz
(Sinead Keenan), who are each
doing what they can to keep
their complicated lives afloat.
We soon learnt that, despite
her profession, mum-of-one
Roz was struggling to pay her
rent and other debts run up by
her gambling-addicted partner
Winston (Charlie Carrick).
Seeing she needed help, Roz’s
millionaire client Scott (Gerald
Kyd) made his brazen offer. In
this week’s episode, Roz meets
with Scott and agrees to the
arrangement on two conditions:
they’ll only meet once, and he’ll
have to find another physio.
The following night, racked
with guilt, Roz heads to a hotel
for their secret liaison. Afterwards,
she is appalled by what she’s done,
but also soon grateful to be able
to afford rent, school shoes and
takeaways with the proceeds.

She’s furious,
however, when
Scott later turns up at her
workplace unannounced, saying
he wants to see her again – and
he’ll pay her double this time.
‘Roz knows that accepting
his help again will have huge
repercussions,’ says Keenan.
Meanwhile, Roz’s pal Kate is
reeling from the disappearance
of her 14-year-old daughter,
Lucinda, who vanished when
family friend Lisa forgot to pick
her up from school. Is Lucinda in
danger? Or is there a reason she
doesn’t want to be at home?

HOLDING IT TOGETHER
Keenan is certain that viewers
will be able to relate to all three
women in Deep Water.
‘All families come with some
baggage,’ she says, ‘and there are
some very big, heavy pieces of
baggage for each of them.’
The Dublin-born actress,
who’s now 41, played werewolf
Nina in BBC3’s supernatural
drama Being Human and gained
a BAFTA nomination last year
for her portrayal of Melanie
Jones, the mother of murdered
youngster Rhys Jones, in the
real-life drama Little Boy Blue.
‘Deep Water is an emotional
role, too,’ she says. ‘But because
Roz is the practical one in the
relationship, I don’t think she lets
herself get to the point of crying.’

Deep Water

Wednesday, ITV HD, 9pm

likely to return is Hannah. Last
season, Clay was haunted by her
ghostly presence, but it seems that
might be the last we’ve seen of her.
Meanwhile, the new narrator
will be Ani (Grace Saif ), seen in
the season three trailer scrubbing
blood off a shirt...
With or without Hannah, the
show will have a fourth and final
season in which the students
graduate from Liberty High.
‘At first we thought it could be
the kind of show where you follow
these characters year after year,’
says Yorkey. ‘We thought it could
be a True Detective for teens, where
every year you start with a new
group and a new set of 13 reasons.
‘But there came a point where
I said, “I want to know what
happens next. I don’t want to leave
these characters hanging.”’
