TV & Satellite Week – 17 August 2019

(Brent) #1
Ross Poldark’s renegade Irish
friend Ned Despard’s days appear
to be numbered. After last week’s
dramatic arrest, Ned’s on trial for
treason this week and it looks as
though even our Cornish hero
Ross (Aidan Turner) won’t be able
to save him from the gallows.
The villainous Joseph Merceron
(Tim Dutton) and Ralph Hanson
(Peter Sullivan) have conspired
against Ned from the start and when
they manage to get him sentenced
to be hanged, drawn and quartered,
Ross stages a daring jailbreak in a
last desperate bid to free his friend.
But is it too late?
Here, Vincent Regan, who stars as
Ned, and Kerri McLean, who plays
his wife Kitty, reveal the tragedy that
awaits the Despard couple and how
their two Poldark characters are
based on some fascinating real-life
historical figures...

Ned is found guilty of treason this
week. But he’s been stitched up
by Joseph and Ralph, hasn’t he?
Regan Yes, Ned’s fallen foul of the
mahogany industry, and Ralph has
basically stitched him up by saying
he’s been acting against the interests
of the Crown. There’s a real fear
among some people that the
monarchy will be overthrown in a
revolution, just like in France, and
Ned’s seen as an obvious person for
the establishment to stick all the pins
into – he’s an easy scapegoat. So he’s
sentenced to be hanged, drawn and
quartered because they want to
make an example of him.

Sunday, BBC1 HD, 9pm

General incompetence, a knack
for making achingly foolish decisions
and an overeagerness to please his
dad – all these traits were on display
when lettings agent Stath (Jamie
Demetriou) first appeared on our
screens last year in Stath Lets Flats.
Now, the imbecilic Greek-
Cypriot Londoner and his crew
of long-suffering colleagues at
Michael & Eagle Lettings are
back – but this time there’s a
brash new boss at the helm in
the shape of smug estate agent
Julian (Dustin Demri-Burns). W

Loathsome and loud, Julian
previously worked for Smethwicks,
the rival agency next door, but has
been given the top job by Stath’s
dad (Christos Stergioglou), who
owns the company.
‘Of course this doesn’t go
down at all well with Stath,’ says
Demetriou, who also writes the
BAFTA-nominated series. ‘Julian
wants to embrace the new wave
of wealthy Millennials and hipsters
so we see Stath having to integrate
with people he would never
normally mix with.’
As the series begins, Stath
is horrified to realise he’s been
completely left out of the glossy
new promotional video for the
agency that Julian has created
