place. Before fastening, I realized

the lag screws I had ordered were

too long. If I had driven them in

without discovering this, I’d have

blown the screw tip out the top

of the handrail. To prevent over-

driving, I added extra washers

beneath the head of the lag screw.

The lag screws that connect the

rail are driven from inside the

newel post. Always double-check

the size of the hardware before

final assembly. This lag screw

would have pierced through the

top of the handrail if we hadn’t

discovered it was too long. A few

extra washers added beneath the

screw head prevented this from

happening.

Use a socket wrench with an

extension to cinch down the

rail-connection screw.

A Bosch crossbeam laser helped to

make sure the baluster locations

along the treads would align plumb

and centered beneath the

handrail.
