Diabetes Self-Management – September 2019

EDITOR’S

NOTE

Dear readers,

I

used to get excited for back-to-school season, when
I could stock up on new notebooks and pencils and
fall clothes and make resolutions to succeed in the
upcoming school year (I know, I was kind of a nerd).
Even though I don’t go “back to school” any more, I still
love the change of season and the promise it brings of
restoring healthy habits in our lives.
This fall, whether you’re headed back to school, back
to work or back into your favorite cool-weather sweater,
savor the benefits a routine can provide and use this
chance to make sure your routine is healthy for you. Some
of those good habits you may want to strengthen include
improving your sleep (page 34), enjoying the cool weather
with a hike (page 32) and cooking delicious meals to
spend quality time with loved ones.
Autumn also provides an opportunity to try something
new and fun and shake up old routines that aren’t
working as well. That’s why this issue has information
on cooking with exotic ingredients and flavors from
around the world (page 37) and reasons you may want to
consider working from home for your health (page 18).
If you’re a nerd like me, you’ll love reading about the
latest diabetes research and news (page 9). If you’re a
foodie (also like me), you’ll find recipes that help you
manage your weight while being delicious and making
sure your weeknights aren’t too hectic (page 50).
I hope this new season brings you an opportunity to
reestablish healthy habits and let go of routines that are
not helpful. This fall issue of Diabetes Self-Management has
something for everyone.
Be well!

Best,

Lydia Goerner
