“Despite knowinghowmanyhourswouldbeinvolvedinhandstitchingthis
quilt, I’ve beenlongingtomakeit forquitea while.Theplanwastomix
English paperpiecingandappliquétomakea hand-sewnquilttop.I designed
a ‘garland’witha mixtureofshapes,whicharestitchedtogetherusingthe
traditionalEnglishpaperpiecing(EPP)ormosaicmethod.However,I did
cheat a littlebyglue-bastingtheshapespriortosewingthem,ratherthan
the bastingI alwaysusedtodo.I’vespentyearswhipstitchingmyEPPpieces
together, butnowI prefertostitchthemfromthebackofthepieces,usingmore
of a ladderstitchfora neaterlook.Thetrickiestbitofthewholequiltis tucking
the points inwhenappliquéingthegarlandtothebackground,andI have
included instructionstohelpyouwiththis.I leftthe 108 tinycirclesuntilthe
end and wasa littleworriedthatthiswouldbeaninterminablejob.It turned
out to be oneofthequickeststages!It is a lotofwork,butI dohopeyouagree
that the overalleectis worthallthosehours.I doubtI willbedesigningand
stitching asecondone,whichis whyI’veputmynametothisone...”–JoAvery

Cutting out


1


For each block, choose seven (7)
dierent fabrics for the EPP, one
(1) for each of the dierent shapes.
Cut as follows:
QFour (4) pieces using template A.
QFour (4) pieces using template B.
QEight (8) pieces using template C.
QEight (8) pieces using template D.
QEight (8) pieces using template E.
QFour (4) pieces using template F.
QFour (4) pieces using template G.

From the green fabric, cut as
follows for each block:
QFour (4) strips on the bias each
measuring 1in x 11in.
QTwelve (12) leaves using the
template.

From the flower heads fabric cut
four (4) flower heads for each
block using the pattern.

From the circles fabric cut twelve
(12) circles for each block using
the template.

Cut the binding fabric into eight
(8) 2in x WOF strips.

English paper piecing

Cut all the paper templates from
two (2) of the printed sheets.
