ENCHANTEDFOREST
“Many traditionalblocks,suchas theTreeof Paradise(orTreeof Life)block,
were inspiredbythethingsthatearlyquilterssawaroundthem;in thiscase,
the toweringforestsof NorthAmerica.Theblockwastraditionallypieced‘on
point’ withhalf-squaretriangles,andmany19thcenturyexamplesweremade
in two colours,emphasisingthebold,graphicqualityof theblock.Looking
back to thatoriginalinspiration,myquilthasbecomea fairytaleforest,filled
with the chatterof roostingbirds.TheleavesarepiecedwithFlyingGeese
units – whichmakesthetrunksa breezeto piece– anda varietyof greenprints
glimmer againsta twilightgreybackground,withthebirdsthemselvesadding
a touch ofglowingcolour.Whilethecentreof everytreeis slightlydierent,
the trunksandbranchesarealikeandthereis a lovelyrhythmto thepiecingof
the leaves.Youmightdecideto makejustoneortwobirds– it’syourforestand

follows:
QSeven (7) 1in x WOF strips and
set them aside for the inner border.
QOne (1) 5in x WOF strip. Subcut
into six (6) 5in squares.

quarters, cut as follows:
QSeven (7) 5in squares.
QSix (6) 2in squares.
QOne (1) 1in x 2in piece.
QOne (1) 2in x 4in piece.

Choose three (3) print 9in x 11in
pieces for the nest boxes/birds
and cut as follows from each:
QOne (1) 4in x 6in piece (nests).
QOne (1) 2in x 4in piece (wings).
QTwo (2) 2in squares (body and
wings).

QOne (1) 1in square (body).
