Fabrics used
Q This quilt was made with a variety
of fabrics by Tilda, Lori Holt for
Riley Blake, Vanessa Goertzen for
Moda and Liberty. The trunks
were pieced in Purebred Barnwood
in grey by Erin Michael for Moda,
the background is Linen Texture in
slate grey and the border is Nordic
Snowflake, both by Makower.
Notes
Q Please read through the pattern
before you begin, assuming a in
seam allowance and a fabric width
(WOF) of 42in. Nicola always
recommends making a test block.
Fig 1A
fabric, it may suit you better to cut
one (1) 8 in x WOF strip.
Q One (1) 3in x WOF strip. Subcut
into eight (8) 3in squares.
Q Two (2) 2 in x WOF strips.
Subcut into twenty-nine (29) 2 in
squares.
Q From the leftovers, cut five (5)
1 i n squ a r e s for t he bi rd s’ be a k s.
6
From the background (dark grey)
fabric, cut as follows:
Q One (1) 22 in x WOF. Subcut
into two (2) 10 in x 22 in pieces
and four (4) 4 in x 22 in pieces.
Q Four (4) 4 in x WOF. Subcut into
one (1) 4 in x 18 in and thirty-
two (32) 4 in squares.
Q Twelve (12) 3in x WOF strips.
Subcut into one-hundred-and-
fifty-six (156) 3in squares.
Q Fifteen (15) 2 in x WOF strips.
Set seven (7) aside for outer
sashing and subcut the remainder
as follows:
- Sixteen (16) 2 in x 8 in pieces.
- Two (2) 2 in x 4 in pieces.
- Eighty-six (86) 2 in squares.
- From the leftovers cut three (3) 2in
diameter circles.
Q One (1) 1 in strip. Subcut as
follows: - One (1) 1 in x 4 in piece.
- Four (4) 1 in x 2 in pieces.
- Four (4) 1 in squares.
7
From the outer border fabric, cut
eight (8) 3 in x WOF strips.
8
From the binding fabric cut seven
(7) 2 in x WOF strips.
Making the Flying
Geese units
9
To make the ‘leaf’ units, mark
a diagonal line on the back of
four (4) 3in background squares and
pin two (2) on opposite corners of
a 5 in green square – right sides
together – lining up the diagonal
lines and placing the squares a few
threads shy of the corners. The 3in
squares should overlap at the centre,
as shown in Fig 1A.
10
Stitch in away from both
sides of the diagonal line.
Cut along the diagonal to make two
(2) units and press the background
triangles ‘open’, as shown in Fig 1B.
11
Pin the remaining two (2)
background squares on the
‘empty’ corners and, again, sew in
away from both sides of the diagonal
line on both units, as shown in Fig
1C. Cut along the diagonal line and
press ‘open’ as before to make four
(4) F ly i ng Geese u nits.
12
Trim each one to 2 in x
4 in, as shown in Fig 1D,
either using a speciality ruler –
like a BlocLoc – or by using your
standard ruler. First, find the corner
marked with a 45-degrees diagonal
which will help you to line up your
unit, and then mark 2 in x 4 in
dimensions with washi (low-tack)
tape. Make sure you retain a in
seam allowance away from the ‘tip’
of your geese. Make thirty-seven (37)
sets of four (4), one-hundred-and-
forty-eight (148) total.
