a breatherandthereonthebench

wasa familiar-lookingblackpouch.

AssoonasI sawit, I knewit wasa

camerathatsomeonehadleftbehind.

Switchingit onandflickingthroughthe

imagesit becameapparentthathere

wasthreeyears’worthof somebody’s

lifeviaholidays,birdsandconcerts,

andyettherewasonlyoneshot

of a familymemberlookingat the

photographer.Therewasnoidentifying

name,mobilenumberoraddressin

thepouchoronthecamera.

It’seasytoassumethatif welose

a possessionthefinderwon’tbother

tryingtoreuniteit withtheowner,and

yetI reallywantedtogetthecamera

backtoitsowner.Afterall,howwould

I feelif someonefoundmycamera?

IdeastoIDequipmentincludehaving

a stickylabelonthecamerabattery,

takinga photoona newmemorycard

of yourcontactdetails,oreventhe

simpleideaof a pieceof paperinside

thepouchorbag.Thisadvicegoes

foranythingelsesuchasa laptop,

rucksackorholidayluggage.Don’t

assumethatbecauseyouaretraveling

witha bigpieceof baggagethatyou

won’tloseit; wealldosillythingswhen

wedashfora taxiorgetdistracted.

Ona familyholiday,myfatheronce

droveoffhavingleft the map on the

roof of the car.

Checkingonlinethereappearstobe

plentyof optionstoreunitecameras

andowners,butwheredoI start?I

phoneda YouthHosteladjacentto

thespotwhereI foundthecamera,but

tonoavail,andtheCountypolicesaid

nocamerashadbeenreportedlost.

Wouldtheownerhaveregisteredit

withthecameramanufacturerand

wouldthecompanythengiveouta

customer’snameandaddresstoa

stranger?I thinknot.

school.Thephotography

club,whichwasrunbyour

deputyhead,washeldon

Thursdayeveningsat my

schoolin southEssex.The

darkroom consisted of two

largelightproofwooden

panelsfixedontothe

outsideof theoffice

windowswhichworked

mostof thetime,but

occasionallyfelldownjust

when all the bromide

paperwasexposed;

however,despitevarious

mishapsI reallytookto

whatbecamemyhobby.

I rememberthemethod

usedbya fellowpupilto

distinguishthedeveloper

fromthefixerwhenwe

onlyhadthedimlightfrom

thesafelight– hewould

diphisfingerintooneof

thedishesanddabit onto

thetipof histongue.Highly

questionable,tosaythe

developingandprinting

donein anairingcupboard.

Nowmyinterestis digital

camerasanddigitalediting.

ButI liketothinkit wasall

duetothatschooldeputy

trouble -free .H owever,

earlyin 2018,myK-S

startedtoexhibitexactly

thesameproblemasMike

described,andgradually

gotworse.Googlesoon

showedmethatit wasa

well-knownfault.

A tinycapacitor,which

I assumePentaxbuysin

bulk,wasdeteriorating.

Someuserseven

suggestedobtainingand

fittinga replacement,but

I’dassumeit wouldrequire

strongnerves,verysteady

handsandperfect

eyesight.I lookedat a few

professionalrepairers

beforeselectingJPService

problem,quoteda total

gotthecamerabackfully

workingwithina weekof
