Whenwasthesocietyfounded?

TheGrimsbyPhotographicSocietywasthe

firstclubin Lincolnshireforphotography

enthusiasts.It wasfoundedin 1894,withits

firstexhibitionbeingheldin 1907.Thisyear

wecelebrateour125thanniversary,and

intendmarkingtheoccasion with a number

of high-profileevents.

Whatdoesthecluboffernewmembers?

Weliketomakenewmembersfeelwelcome

rightfromthestart.Theyareofferedhelpand

adviceonallaspectsof photographycovering

equipment,photographictechniquesand

imagepresentation.Theclubalsooperates

a mentoringsystemprovidedbythemore

experiencedmembers.In additiontothis,

thereareopportunitiesfornewmembers

toattendinternaltrainingsessions.

Describea typicalclubmeeting.

Weusuallymeetaround7pmfora 7:30pm

start.Wedotheusualthingslikecompetitions

for prints and PDIs; we have guest speakers,

demonstrations,andin-houseworkshops.

Wealsofactorin a goodfewmembers’nights

withtalksfromourresidentexperts.

Doyouinviteguestspeakers?

Theprogrammecommitteeworkshardto

keepthingsfresh.Thepoolof speakersin the

Lincolnshireareais relativelysmall,andit can

becomecostlytoinvitetalentfromfurther

afield.Thisdoesn’tmeanwe won’t look

beyondourboundaries.

Whatarethemostpopularphotographic

genresamongyourmembers?

Ourmembershaveinterestsin allthemain

genresof photography.Thisprovidesthe

clubwitha well-roundedcollectionof work

tochoosefromwhenselectingimages

forcompetitionsandexhibitions.Weare

particularlyfortunatetohavesomevery

talentedmemberswhospecialisein mono,

sports,andmacrodigitalcreativework.

Domemberscompetein competitions?

A goodnumberof ourmembersdoenter

externalcompetitionsandexhibitions,and

therehasbeena greatdealof successduring

thepastfewyears.Regionally,thereis the

LincolnshirePhotographicAssociation(LPA)

whichholdsa numberof competitions

includingtheinterclubBattlesforthearea.

(Wewonit in 2018forthesecondyear

running.)Thereis alsotheNorth& East

MidlandsPhotographicFederation

(N&EMPF)AnnualExhibition.Onceagain,

ourmembershave been very successful

in recentyears.

Howmanyclubmembersdoyouhave?

Wecurrentlyhave 42 membersandweare

proudtoboastthat 16 of themarefemale.

Thisis somethingthathasbeendifficultto

achieve in the past, so we are pleased to have

gotthisfar.Weareof coursealways on the

lookoutfornewmembers.

Haveyouplannedanytripsoroutings?

Eachyearwenormallyholdsixtoeight

‘outshoots’,aswecallthem.Thesenormally

takeplaceonourclubevenings,andin

thepasthaveprovedtobegoodboth

photographicallyaswellassocially.There

area fewmemberswhogettogether under

theirownarrangements.

Canyoushareanyfunnystories?

Perhapsnotsomucha funnystory,butat one

of our‘outshoots’lastyearwevisiteda local

flyingclubin thehopeof gettingsomeimages

of theaircraftandworkshoparea.Wewere

warmlywelcomedbyoneof theflyingclub

memberswhotooktimetoshowusaround

someof theaircraft,hangers,etc.Aftersome

time,wesplituptowanderfreelyaround

takingpictures.Abouthalfanhourin,and

muchtooursurprise,someof theaircraft

ownersturnedupandofferedusalla flight.

Seeingthefacesof someof ourpartywas

amazing.Therewereallkindsof aircraft

includingmicrolites,stuntplanes,oldplanes,

newplanes,andkit-builtplanes,withmostof

themlookingmostunairworthy.Therewaslots

of:‘Ohmygod,I can’tbelieveI’mdoingthis.’

Needlesstosay,weallhada great and

unexpectedexperience.

Whataretheclub’sgoalsforthefuture?

Tocontinuebuildingupourmembershipand

expandingourlevelof expertise.Wewillalso

continuetopromotetheartof photographyto

thewidercommunitybyholdingopendaysand

exhibitions during this, our anniversary year.
