‘heavyhanded’afterpostinga sign
sayingit reservedtherightto use
photographstakenat a publiceventfor
futurepromotionalpurposes.Theevent
markedthe150thanniversaryof Saltburn
Pierin RedcarandCleveland,North
Yorkshire,promptinglocalRPSmembersto
contactAPandquestionwhatwouldhappen
if photographersdidn’twantthecouncilto
reproduceanyof theirimages,andwhether
it gavethemtherightto editoralterthem.
AfterbeingcontactedbyAP,thecouncil
promisedto makeitssignsclearer.‘The[sign]
is justto letpeopleknowthecouncilmay
takephotosat anevent,andit maybeused
onlineorin anyof ourpublications,’saidthe
council’sMarkMalik.‘It is notstatingthatwe
feelwehavetherightsto images/filmtaken
byotherpeople.I canseethatthesigncan
bereadassuch,butto beclear,wedonot
demandimagerightsfromphotographers
at ourevents.I willsuggestto colleaguesthe
sign is reworded to avoid further confusion.’

photographerscontacted
througha rangeof London
homelesscharities,including
CrisisandStMungo’s.
Alltheimagesweretaken
on 100 Fujifi lm single-use

cameras,withthethemeof
theprojectbeing‘MyLondon’.
Astheorganisersexplain,‘This
is nota projectaboutwhat
homelessnesslookslike– it’s
aboutwhatthephotographers
loveaboutLondon.’Training
onusingthecameraswas
givenbyRPSmembers,and
88 of thecameraswere
returned.The 20 finalimages
forthecalendarwerechosen
bya variedjury,comprisingpro
photographers,representatives
of thehomelessnesssector
and other interested parties,

includingAP’sCo-Features
editor,AilsaMcWhinnie.
