FILM PREVIEW | DRAMA
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is US director Quentin Tarantino’s
ninth film. Audiences have often been divided over his use of
violence. Turning this to his advantage, Tarantino sets his latest
movie in a world where imagined and real-life violence are major
players in their own right: where else, then, but in Hollywood?
The year is 1969, and ageing actor Rick Dalton (Leonardo
DiCaprio) is finding it hard to adjust to a world in which televi-
sion ratings are changing entertainment. Rick’s only friend, Cliff,
a stuntman double (Brad Pitt), is doing his best to keep Rick
from sinking into alcohol addiction. Then things start to look a
little brighter: director Roman Polanski and actress Sharon Tate
(Margot Robbie) become Rick’s neighbours, and he hopes for
a little reflected glory. At the same time, the cult figure Charles
Manson turns up — Manson was one of the criminals convicted
of the 1969 murder of Sharon Tate (and several others). But even
as Tarantino exploits the potential of this terrible event, he goes
beyond the actual violence to what lies behind it: a pop culture
in which brilliant colours and fast lives cover deep insecurities.
Starts 15 August.

FILM PREVIEW | COMEDY
In the 1960s, Britain’s Pinewood Stu-
dios made a name for themselves
with the comedy film series Carry
On, starting a tradition of gentle but
earthy humour that is still to be found
in British cinema today. Following a
group of Cornish fishermen whose singing talents are discov-
ered and marketed by a London music executive, the film Fisher-
man’s Friends follows firmly in these footsteps. Based on real-life
events, the movie brings together an unlikely combination:
big-business music and the homegrown talents of a group of
fishermen singing “the rock ’n’ roll of 1752”. Sandwiched be-
tween this clash of cultures is a love story, too. The sentimental
education of a young man in search of life’s real values also gets
an airing. It’s all good, clean fun, and it starts on 8 August.

EXHIBITION | PHOTOGRAPHY
On show at NONAM (North American
Na tive Museum) in Zurich is the work of
Edward S. Curtis (1868–1952), an American
photographer whose project, The North Amer-
ican Indian, was funded by J. P. Morgan and
published from 1907 onwards. The project
shaped mainstream America’s attitudes to
native peoples. Critics believe Curtis pre-
sented native Indians as romantic primitives. Others praise his
dedication — he took more than 40,000 photos and made 10,000
sound recordings. Either way, Curtis’s work has become legend-
ary. For details, go to http://www.museen-zuerich.ch/museen/museum/nonam
