ATTACK Peter Duncan

Stab horror

solicitor was

‘caring man’

THE devastated brother of
the solicitor stabbed to
death in a busy shopping
centre has paid an
emotional tribute to him.
Peter Duncan, 52, fell to
the ground clutching his
chest after receiving a fatal
blow from a screwdriver in
Newcastle on Wednesday.
As he mourned the
killing of his brother, Mick
Duncan wrote: “I can’t put
the loss into words.”
Peter’s family described
him as a “kind and caring
man who was always first
to help others”.
Shopkeepers said he had
appeared to intervene in a
row with youths.
But Northumbria Police
said yesterday it was an
“unprovoked attack”.
Murder squad detectives
arrested a 15-year-old as
they continued to question
two 17-year-olds.

Patients sue

over implant

link to cancer

TWENTY British women
are taking legal action after
developing a rare form of
cancer linked to their
breast implants.
Mum-of-two Linzy
Bromfield, 50, is one of
those looking to sue the
manufacturers after she
was diagnosed with
“implant-associated
lymphoma” 13 years after
her 2005 operation.
She is now cancer-free
after having the implants
removed but said: “I was
angry and hurt. When you
hear the word ‘cancer’ you
think, am I going to die?”
The women’s lawyer,
Zahra Nanji of Leigh Day,
said: “Manufacturers of
these implants need to
take responsibility.”
The UK’s medical regu-
lator, The MHRA, assesses
the risk to be one in every
24,000 implants sold.

TREATED Ailing Tikiiri

Tikiiri receives medicine.. but she’s still critical

ELDERLY elephant Tikiiri is back
on her feet after receiving vet care
and medicine in Sri Lanka and is
said to be “looking better”.
But the emaciated 70-year-old
animal is still in a critical condition

after taking part in a religious
pageant that left her exhausted.
Wildlife conservationists say
Tikiiri’s case is a wake-up call to
stop the cruel treatment of
elephants in Sri Lanka. So far

20,000 people have signed a
petition to help save her.
Upeksha Samanthi from Kandy,
which is near the animal’s home in
Kegalle, told us: “I went to see
Tikiiri on Friday morning and she

was looking a little bit better, but
not great. She is malnourished due
to difficulties chewing her food,
which the owner says is caused by
age, she is exhausted after walking
in the pageant and she is critical.”

PM’s partner slams ‘cruel,

sick and cowardly’ pursuit

CARRIE Symonds has blasted trophy
hunting in her first speech since moving
into No10 with partner Boris Johnson.
The environmental activist, who has
backed the Mirror’s campaign to end the
sick pursuit, said it was “cruel and cowardly”.
She told of how she had marvelled at
seeing a puffin during a birdwatching trip to
the Bempton Cliffs in East Yorkshire – where
she and Mr Johnson were pictured in May.
Miss Symonds said: “It was magic, some-
thing I’ll never forget. Then, weeks later I
saw another puffin. But this one wasn’t
waddling happily in and out of his burrow.
“No. He was in a newspaper, his blood-
stained body lined up alongside dozens of
others, all slaughtered by so-called
‘trophy hunters’. Why would
anyone want to shoot a puffin?
“Why destroy something so
beautiful, then stuff its poor life-
less body to keep as some kind of
macabre trophy? A trophy is
meant to be something you’re
awarded if you’ve achieved some-
thing of merit. Trophy hunting is
the opposite. It is cruel, sick,
cowardly and I will never under-
stand the motivation to do it.”
Miss Symonds spoke at the
Birdfair conference near
Oakham, Leics, where she met
celebrities including Springwatch presenter
Chris Packham and Dragons’ Den star and
animal rights advocate Deborah Meaden.
Campaigners hope she can help press the
Government into banning hunting trophies
being brought back to the UK.
Birdfair founder Tim Appleton said: “We’re
over the moon Carrie is supporting us.”
Miss Symonds, 31, moved into Downing
Street with Mr Johnson, 55, when
he became PM three weeks ago.
She was pictured this week
meeting guests at a reception for
hospice workers in No10.
Miss Symonds backed our
trophy hunting campaign last
month, tweeting a splash showing
a couple kissing next to a dead
lion.
She said: “A Mirror front page I
wholeheartedly agree with!”
