CRICKET: THE ASHES

SECOND TEST
THIRD DAY FROM LORD’S

ANDY MURRAY has claimed the
latest antics of his friend Nick
Kyrgios are bad for tennis.
The Aussie has been fined
£93,254 for five separate acts of
unsportsmanlike conduct during
his defeat at the Cincinnati
Masters and could yet be banned.
Included on the rap sheet was
leaving the court without
permission to smash two rackets
and calling Irish umpire Fergus
Murphy a “f*****g tool.”
The Scot has always acted as a
mentor to the 24-year-old and has
previously defended his actions.
But after Kyrgios’ defeat by
Karen Khachanov, Murray said: “I
chatted to him a little bit after the
match – it wasn’t good. And I felt
for Fergus as he shouldn’t have to
put up with that. It’s obviously up
to him (Kyrgios). I think for the
most part a couple of weeks ago in

really good for tennis, but last

Murray has decided not to play
doubles at the US Open as he
steps up his training for a full-time
return to singles action.
The former world No.1, who
played his first singles match since
January in Cincinnati, accepted a
wild-card to play singles at the
Winston-Salem Open in North
Carolina next week. He could then
opt to play a second-tier
Challenger event during the final
Grand Slam of the year.
“I’m not going to play doubles at
the US Open,” Murray said.
“My goal is to get back playing
at the level that I want to on the
singles court, and I’ve decided that
I need to focus all my energies on
that right now. The US Open,
doubles and mixed, can be another
couple of weeks that you are
slowing things down.”

I need to be there to pick up the

WATER WAY TO GO FOR BRIDEWELL
BY ZOE BURN
TOMMY BRIDEWELL topped the British
Superbike Championship timesheets as
rain played havoc at Cadwell Park.
Race chiefs were forced to cancel
the action yesterday after heavy
rainfall, with Bridewell in front as
only 12 riders braved the conditions.
“We had a radical new wet setting
which we wanted to try,” said the Oxford
Racing Ducati rider (above), who clocked a
best lap of 1min 40.223secs. “It’s a shame
the rain came in so bad because I would
have liked a few more laps.
“It’s one of those things. We
expect a dry weekend but, if it does
rain now, we are going to be in a
very strong position.”
Second quickest was Be Wiser
Ducati’s Josh Brookes, as rookie Ryan
Vickers was third aboard the RAF Regular
and Reserves Kawasaki.

BRITISH TOURING CARS
ENGLAND are convinced
they can still force a series-
levelling result in the
Second Test thanks to the
soft batting underbelly of
both teams.
Another two sessions were
lost to the weather on day
three to curtail what looked
like being another bumper
day for England’s bowlers.
Pumped up by Jofra Archer’s
first Test wicket on debut and
one apiece for Stuart Broad
and Chris Woakes, England
had enough time to make
inroads into the Aussies.
And even though day three
met an early watery grave
after just 24 overs, the Aussies
are teetering on 80-4, still 178

NO REST FOR
THE WICKET
SCO
The Aussie batting looks just as bad as
England’s and Broad insists this gives
Root a good chance to square the series
delivery and despite a review
the decision stood.
In conditions ideal for seam
bowling, he was a consistent
threat, even if he has not yet
removed his Rajasthan Royals
team-mate Smith.
“Any Test wicket you get is
great, I had to wait a little bit
longer than Jofra, at the SSC
in Colombo,” added Broad,
who got rid of Chaminda Vaas
in his 29th over in 2007.
“He showed great control,
bowls a nice nagging length. I
don’t think there’s any doubt
that he has the attributes to
be a Test cricketer. There are
going to be times when he
blows teams away.
“You feel even on day-four
and day-five pitches with his
height and bounce, he’s going
to bring stumps into play.”
though so much time has
been lost to rain.
“Our aim is to get the next
six wickets by lunch and bat
until lunch on day five and try
and force a result.”
If England are going to pull
off what would be one of the
more remarkable Test
victories ever seen at this
ground, they are going to
need plenty more from the
man who pulled off the most
remarkable one-day win here
last month.
Archer bowled a seven-over
spell and got rid of Cameron
Bancroft with some classic
use of the slope as the ball
nipped down it and into the
opener’s pads.
The joy was unconfined
and the celebration as natural
as his languid run-up and
behind, with yet more heavy
reliance on Steve Smith to dig
them out of trouble again.
With Smith’s idiosyncratic
leaves adding to the drama as
Archer (above) topped 94mph
in a testing session, fans were
denied the chance to see
more celebrations, but Broad
believes they will arrive early
this morning.
“They were good conditions
to bowl in and we would have
liked to continue,” said Broad.
“We got into a strong position
so it was a shame.
“We’re pretty positive about
our chances, there are 98
overs in each of the next two
days which has been enough
for both teams to bowl each
other out, hasn’t it?
“It could still be an
intriguing match, even

will stay as England white-ball
captain, if his troublesome
back lets him.
The World Cup
winner (right) had a

With the World T20 in
Australia in October next

get fit and know it’s not an
injury risk, then I’ll be able to
make a call on it.”
