PREMIER LEAGUE
ST MARY’S, KICK-OFF 3PM

Super Cup
final, when he
pulled off the penalty
shoot-out save against
Chelsea that gave the Reds
the trophy.
But in the wild
celebrations that followed,
a fan got through the
security cordon to dash on
the pitch and, in his
attempts to escape arrest,
barrelled into Liverpool
players. Adrian and Joe
Gomez were knocked to
the ground.
The goalkeeper (above)
said: “We were celebrating
and one guy jumped from
the crowd and started
running. He tackled me.”
There were real
concerns Adrian, who
suffered a swollen ankle,
would miss today’s visit to
Southampton, where he
was due to make his first
Premier League start for
the Reds after replacing
injured first-choice Alisson.
But after intensive
treatment on the flight
back from Istanbul he now
has a chance of making the
trip south. “It’s better now
and I’m very optimistic I’ll
play tomorrow,” he said.
Boss Jurgen Klopp has
called for UEFA to act. “It’s
crazy,” he said. “How can
something like this happen?
“How can we almost lose
a player like this? I like that
we don’t have fences in
stadiums but that means a
lot of responsibility for
supporters.
“If one supporter cannot
stop himself then those
around him should do it.”

for three hours on the flight
back, as head of physio Lee
Nobes attempted to minimise
the damage done by a pitch
invader sliding into the keeper
during the victory celebrations.
Without this attention, Adrian
would have no chance of
playing today.
Every player was tested
yesterday and there was one
serious training session to
concentrate on the Saints game.
Players are weighed to judge
how much fluid has been lost,
and sweat tested to determine
their salt and mineral balance.
All this data is collated and
diets tailored accordingly.
The return to Melwood
allows full use of facilities, and
crucially computer analysis of
the previous game. The medi-
cal analysis is so good now, that
any players with serious issues
of fatigue are flagged up, and
the information given to Klopp
before he selects his team.

fluids. Then food is handed out
in the form of digestible
protein, to return energy levels
and protect muscle mass
against wastage.
There would have been ice
baths too, but the facility was
not available in the stadium,
and it was too late at the hotel.
So instead, recovery is planned
in forensic detail by the team of
physiologists.
That means massage,
treatment and, crucially, rest.
Liverpool stayed in Istanbul
rather than flying straight back,
because any flight at 5am
would mean not returning to
Merseyside until 9am, and an
afternoon training session.
Instead, they stayed and
trained in Istanbul – a simple
recovery session for those who
played, nothing more – before
flying back to Liverpool, where
the players were sent home to
get back some of the sleep they
were denied.
Adrian received treatment

arrived back at their Istanbul
hotel at 3.30am, but two
players – skipper Jordan
Henderson and James Milner

  • were chosen for drug testing,
    and didn’t return until 4am.
With a game at 3pm in
    Southampton today, that
    leaves precious little time to
    recover from 120 minutes in
    almost 30-degree heat, on a
    humid, airless night.
    So how have Liverpool’s
    players been prepared for
    today’s match at St Mary’s?
    Recovery plans started
before the game in Turkey, with
a carefully prepared diet – food
    weighed and programmed to
    ensure the right nutrients at
    the right levels, and vitamin
    supplements, electrolytes and
    minerals.
Even on the final whistle, the
    team of physios distributed
    drinks which are carefully
    prepared, with the right
    balance of hydration, salt and
    electrolytes to replace lost

The game didn’t finish until
almost 1am (Istanbul time).
With the trophy lift and
celebration, it was 1.30am
before they left the field, and
Jurgen Klopp’s press conference
didn’t start until 2am... with
