Luke Steele.

DANIEL STENDEL refuses to change
Barnsley’s cavalier style despite leaking
five goals in back-to-back defeats.
The Tykes lost 2-0 at Sheffield
Wednesday on Saturday and were humbled
3-0 by Carlisle in the EFL Cup on
Tuesday.
But despite that, the Barnsley
boss (right) will not alter their
high pressing style when
Charlton visit today.
“No one expected the
performance and, in the end, Carlisle
deserved to win 3-0,” said Stendel. “In the
opening game we won against Fulham.
We’re the same players and the same team
and we’ll try again against Charlton.”
FRANK NEEDS GRIFFIN SPARK
BY IAN BAKER
THOMAS FRANK expects
Brentford to dominate against
Hull as they look to make
Griffin Park a fortress in their
final season at the ground.
The Bees lost 1-0 at home to
Birmingham on the opening
day, hitting the woodwork
three times and won 1-0 at
Middlesbrough last week but
Frank (right) wants more.
“I expect us to dominate the
game, especially in longer
spells,” said the Danish boss.
“There are so many small
turnovers in the game, we
need to play more forward.
“The aim is for us to
dominate and play with
intensity. We’ve been sharp in
training, we’ve been focusing
on the offensive part.
“We want that first home
win of the season, this is the
last season at Griffin Park and
we want to create that
fortress.”

Austin scores on his
Albion debut against
Millwall in midweek
Bilic hails Austin goal powers
but wants squad to chip in too
BY JAMES NURSEY
SLAVEN BILIC has guaranteed
goals from Charlie Austin – but
warned West Brom must not
become too reliant on their new
striker.
Albion snapped up Austin for
£4million from
Premier League
Southampton on
deadline day.
He scored and
played 60 minutes
on his debut in
Tuesday’s 2-1
Carabao Cup
defeat by Millwall.
The prolific
marksman is
pushing to start
today at Luton and
boss Bilic is already
impressed with the
30-year-old.
“He’s going to
score goals, no
doubt about it,” said Bilic. “With
the players around him, and the
style of play we hope to continue
with, he should be in a position to
score a lot for us.
“But we have to create chances
for him and it’s teamwork. He’s
very experienced but it can’t be
only him. There’s a pressure on him
like on any centre-forward or No.9,
that’s why they get the back pages.
“But I don’t want him to have
that negative pressure that he has
to bring that many goals.”
Albion also have Kenneth
Zohore up front after paying
Cardiff £8m for the Dane.
But Austin has a better proven
record with 52 goals in his last
84 games in the second tier.
He was frozen out at
Saints and last started a
game for them on March

  1. Bilic (right) added:
    “Charlie’s done really well. It’s
    been a positive surprise.
    “OK you don’t lose your
    touch, but you can lose
    your touch in matches if
you don’t play for such a
    long time.”

GRAEME JONES would love
nothing more than to put one
over his former club West
Brom today.
The Luton boss (above)
was assistant to Darren
Moore when they were
sacked by the Baggies –
despite being fourth in the
Championship at the time.
And Jones is looking for
revenge at Kenilworth Road.
He said: “The professional
side of me just views it as any
other match, it’s the next
game on the calendar.
“The emotional side of me
remembers I had eight or
nine really good months
there, I enjoyed the football
club and the people that
worked there.
“But there’s nothing I
wouldn’t give for three points.
“We were fourth, March 9,
61 points, I think we were top
goal-scorers in the
Championship, so if Luton are
in that position next March 9
I’ll take it right now.
“These things happen
in football. I’ve moved
on and now I’m just
concentrating on Luton
results and
performances.”
Luton are eyeing
a first win back in
the Championship
and Jones added:
“We need to
match their
physicality, we
need to play on top
of them.”
