THE Great St Wilfrid
Handicap (3.15, Ripon) has
plenty of trends to follow.
The key ones in the big
sprint are perhaps:
■ 12 of the last 17 winners
carried 8st 12lb or more
■ Only 3 winners in that
period won last time out
■ 13 winners in same time
scale were aged 4 or older

Stax worth a spin

■ Only 5 favourites have
won since 1990.
It’s worth taking two that
fit the bill against the field
but do include Staxton
from the 2017 winning
trainer Tim Easterby.
BELATED BREATH 2pts
place.
STAXTON 2pts win.

LAHORE can give Phil Makin
the biggest win of his
burgeoning training career
by beating 19 opponents for
the William Hill Great St
Wilfrid Handicap (3.15) at
Ripon this afternoon.
Makin, forced by injury to
retire from the saddle in March,
has made a bright start to his
new calling – and Lahore has
made a contribution after a
course-and-distance score 12
days ago.
Having taken three runs to
find his feet since leaving Clive
Cox, the son of Elusive Quality
had a length to spare over

Muscika and should give
another good account after
going up just 3lb in the weights.
Earlier on the Ripon card, the
Great St Wilfrid consolation, the
William Hill Silver Trophy
(2.05), is just as trappy as
the big one, but ROYAL
BRAVE is capable of a
bold show at
rewarding odds.
Newbury’s Group 3
Unibet Geoffrey Freer
(2.25) is a good opportunity for
SEXTANT to land his fourth win
of the campaign, at the expense
of the favourite Morando.
The Queen’s son of Sea The

Stars has made great strides as
a four-year-old, collecting two
big-money handicaps at Ascot
and one at Windsor.
Sextant steps up in grade after
the latest of them, at the
royal racecourse last
month, but can extend
his golden run.
After a fine second
in the Group 2
Superlative Stakes at
Newmarket on the second
run of his life, JUAN ELCANO
should take advantage of a drop
in class for the Listed Denford
Stakes (1.50).
After striking at Haydock Park

on his racecourse bow, the Kevin
Ryan-trained son of Frankel
went under by a length to
Mystery Power on the final day
of the July Festival, and there is
plenty more to come.
After a course-and-distance
second on his latest outing, Ed
Walker’s (left) GEORGE WILLIAM
looks attractively weighted to go
one better in the Unibet
Handicap (3.00).
At Newmarket, LETHAL
ANGEL is due a change of luck in
the Unibet Grey Horse Handicap
(2.45) after making the podium
in each of his six attempts this
season.
