The Classic MotorCycle – September 2019

(vip2019) #1
elcome to thesecondedition ofournew
supplement,RetroRides,this time looking
at some of the products that areperhaps
not as familiar tomany of ourreaders, butwhich offer
traditionally-styl ed motorcycling at reasonable prices,
with machines rangingfrom125ccto the 650ccRoyal
Enfield twin.
Theretromarkethas allsortsofmachinerytooffer,
from theclassicallystyled125cc AJSfeatured, through
to the Brough Superior Iwas fortunateenoughto
spend some timeriding(above).That’s prettymuch the
twoends of theretromarket, with theAjay comingin
nearer the baseline and aimedateither newridersor
thoselooking to downsize, while the Brough Superior
is abespoke,high-end piece of classically-accented
top-drawer engineering.
I’ve alsoridden an AJSCadwell too (IsuspectImay
be theonly person tohave la pped CadwellPark on an

AJS Cadwell!) and while theperformance won’t leave
you with thesame feelingthat steppingoffthe Brough
does (the Brough isagenuinelyexhilaratingmachine to
ride, stable andcapablein the extreme) it does provide
plenty of smiles foryour money.
That, of course, comes backtothe essence of the
motorcyclin gmostofusdo–ridingmainly for pleasure,
we’relookingtomaximiseour enjoyment. And while
many of ushave done that on our‘old’bikes ,the retro
category offers some genuinely interestingalternatives,
either for when kick-startingbecomesachoretoo many
or lugginganA10 on and offitsstand is no longeras
easyasitoncewas.
Enjoythe supplement, we hopeitprovidessome food
for thought.
