172 Classic & Sports Car September 2019

Welcome

I

t’s my pleasure to join Classic & Sports Car in bringing you
a foretaste of this year’s Goodwood Revival, which takes
place from 13-15 September. The Revival was established
as a celebration of the greatest original cars and motorcycles
at the Motor Circuit – one of very few to have remained largely
unaltered since its heyday. Reopening the circuit in 1998,
our intention was always to give these fabulous machines the
most authentic stage on which to create truly thrilling racing.
Wheel-to-wheel racing is at the heart of the event, made
possible by the enthusiasm of the owners and the high
standards of driving and riding. Among my many personal
highlights each year is the Kinrara Trophy. The spectacle of
seeing so many priceless GT cars racing hard as the sun sets
over the track is something that sets the Revival apart.
One of the most impressive aspects of the Revival is how
skilled our crowd has become in capturing the spirit of the
era in so many different ways. The cars, drivers, motorcycles
and riders remain centre stage, but almost everyone who walks
through the gate now plays a role in creating the only motor
racing event to be staged entirely in period. This year, that
sense of wonder will envelop you as you arrive at the main
gate, where our Swinging Sixties display will recreate Carnaby
Street and the Abbey Road studios. The first cars that most
visitors will see are three original Beatles Minis, together
with that of their fellow Liverpudlian Cilla Black.
Minis will be in abundance for the car’s 60th-anniversary
year. We shall also be celebrating 60 years since Cooper
won its first Formula One World Championship, while the
Brooklands Trophy will honour Bentley’s centenary.
As ever, famous riders and drivers, past and present, will
make their way to Sussex. We look forward to seeing returning
friends as well as welcoming new faces.
Making their Revival debuts will be
31-time MotoGP victor Dani Pedrosa
and NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon.
Whether you are coming in person,
watching the live streaming, or the
comprehensive TV coverage, I hope
you all have a wonderful time.
