on the side, but then I won the National
Lottery Community Fund. I was put on a
business course program and had to submit
something at the end it, if you were
successful you’d get an amount of money –
and I was. With the funds I could afford an
assistant and the business grew from there.”
Now her handmade knitwear is stocked
on her website alexgorebrowne.com.
“I would describe them as timeless
classics with a knit twist,” she tells us.
“There are two elements to the label,
one is coming up with the new knitwear
and that is my absolute passion, but I also
want the designs to be wearable.
“We produce everything at a family-run
factory in Italy, it’s been going for three
generations and the staff are paid properly,
so that makes our prices higher. We try to
explain why it can seem expensive and it’s
because we put everything into design and
production – as we want pieces to last
forever, rather than just one season. We
don’t see ourselves as seasonal.”
Alongside her label, Alex has started a
project in Ibiza. “I’m overseeing the fabric
side of a house project there, so that’s
another outlet,” she says, and she still does
consulting work for various designers.
Perhaps one of her most memorable
contributions was McQueen’s AW01
‘merry-go-round’ show in Paris, which
