ISSA
C
hief executive and fashion
director of Tank magazine
and creative agency,
Caroline Issa has the
business of style all wrapped
up. Along with heading up the
super-cool quarterly art and
architecture title, she has helped
create bespoke publications for
Prada and Levi’s and launched
online magazine becauselondon.
com. With her striking looks, thanks
to her Chinese, Lebanese and
Iranian heritage, she’s also a street
style star (and style icon to 199k
Instagram followers) and former
model. Always cool-hunting, she
recently curated a series of talks
for Eccleston Yards, a new creative
hub in London’s Belgravia, and says
her mission is to, “Embrace diverse
voices and showcase young talent”.
Now she’s bringing her personal
style to the people and has designed
a collection of summer dresses for
Next’s collaborative line, Label/
Mix. “I got to choose the prints
from an amazing archive and
brought in vintage dresses that I’ve
been collecting,” she says. “They let
me go crazy and allowed my vision
to shine through.”
On my dream morning I’d wake
up in Tokyo with my partner. I love
Japan – everything they do comes
with some sort of beautiful gesture.
There’s a place called the Palace
Hotel, which is one of my favourite
hotels in the world.
I’d eat a Japanese breakfast –
pickles, sushi, soba noodles. Some
people get turned off by a hot
Asian meal first thing, but I love
a Japanese breakfast.
Then I’d go to a Japanese steam
room – they’re beautiful. I don’t
wear a lot of make-up but I love
skincare routines, so I’d do a facial.
Tata Harper, the organic beauty
brand, has amazing masks. I also
adore Kjaer Weis Beautiful facial oil.
I’d walk around Tokyo, and
take the subway to Koenji where
all the vintage stores and little
weird independent shops are.
And I love Shibuya. I’d go crazy
in paper and stationery stores
- Japanese sticker tape, pens –
Japanese stationery is the best.
I’d be wearing one of my dresses
from my Label/Mix collection.
I live in dresses in the summer and
I’ve designed them so you can run
around in them but still look good.
I’d probably be in sandals – Álvaro
are my go-to. Zyne sandals are
also a favourite – they’re made
in Morocco by women’s co-ops,
which do all of the raffia-work.
Right now I’m obsessed with
my huge Bottega Veneta woven
intrecciato leather tote. It’s green and
black and the perfect size, so I’d be
carrying that. It’s really easy to shove
everything in your life into it.
Then I’d go to Singapore for lunch - I’d have chicken rice at Newton
Food Centre hawkers market. It’s
a real Singaporean favourite. For
dessert I’d have ice kachang – a
tiered ice cake with jellies, beans,
and lots of different colours. You
get a spoon and just dig in – it’s
a multi-sensory experience.
After lunch I’d go to Bhutan.
I’ve been there before and it’s a
magical place. On my first trip
I stayed at the Amankora resort
and discovered my fear of heights
climbing up to the Tiger’s Nest. It’s
a cliff with an incredible Buddhist
monastery at the top, nestled into
the top of the mountain.
For the evening I’d go to
Amanpulo resort in the Philippines,
about an hour south-west of Manila.
It’s a magical, deserted little island
with lodges on the beach and
the most incredible sea. I’d be
wearing a chiffon Dior dress for
dinner on the beach.
Then we’d go to sleep in one of
the amazing little wooden lodges - they’re on a white sandy beach
with views of the transparent blue
water. It’s very quiet – you feel like
you’re on the edge of the earth.
