This is not an Italian restaurant as you may know it. Antica Australis
is an Italian ‘locanda’. A locanda is a local, casual dining establishment
accessible and enjoyed by everyone. It’s a place for locals to feel at home
and where visitors are warmly welcomed.
This is the authentic taste of an Italian village on top of a mountain.
Without having to go all the way to the top of a mountain in regional
Italy. Instead, you get to pause, rest and restore in one of Australia’s most
gorgeous villages – Carcoar on the Belubula River.
Antica Australis is based in a recently restored heritage building on
the corner of Belubula & Icely Streets in the charming historic village of
Carcoar (pop. 200) in the Central West of New South Wales, Australia.
Carcoar is just a scenic 40 minute drive from Bathurst, Orange or Cowra
taking you through some classic and iconic Australian countryside.
Owned and operated by Paolo & Kelly Picarazzi, this is also the

Antica Australis is the original Latin term of reference in the old world
for Australia and means ‘Ancient Southern Land’. It resonates perfectly
with the Southern region of Italy where Paolo is from, the ‘hidden’ food
and wine destination of Ciociaria.
Charming Carcoar: Established in 1821 by the first European settlers,
Carcoar is still perfectly preserved with many heritage buildings and
historic sites and the entire village is classified by the National Trust. The
cheerful Belubula River runs through the village of Carcoar alongside
Antica Australis and the district was the original abundant heartland of
the Wiradjuri people. The word ‘belubula’ is believed to mean ‘stony river’
in the Wiradjuri language.
