annie flanagan’s
favorite moments in
photography happen when
their subjects forget the
camera. For the portrait of
Mississippi activist Laurie
Bertram Roberts (“Where
Roe Doesn’t Reach,” page 24),
Flanagan sat on a bedroom
floor for two hours, talking
with Roberts until the right
moment arrived. Their work
has been published in the
New York Times, espn, and
Smithsonian magazine.

At first, michaela haas be-
lieved it was rare for rape sur-
vivors to have to battle their
assailants in court for custody
of their children. Then she
started talking to the lawyers
and women at the center of
the issue—and realized it
is more common than she
thought (“When Your Rapist
Demands Custody,” page 30).
Haas, a journalist and moti-
vational speaker, is the author
of four books, including one
on overcoming trauma.

j. weston phippen drove
a cream-colored 1964 Volks-
wagen Beetle from Phoe-
nix to Las Cruces, New
Mexico, in college to attend
an event hosted by immigra-
tion lawyer Carlos Spector.
The Bug broke down and he
missed the event, but eight
years later, as a reporter,
Phippen met Spector in El
Paso, Texas, for an interview
(“Hold the Line,” page 46). He
is a former editor at Outside
magazine and the Atlantic.

To tell the story of a small
Oakland public school’s
closure, edwin rios spent
this spring roaming its
locker-lined halls, watching
YouTube with its sixth grad-
ers, and getting deep with the
school principal (“Class War-
fare,” page 4). Rios, who has
spent three years reporting
on education and inequality
for Mother Jones, has cov-
ered segregation, teachers’
strikes, and a school dis-
trict devastated by wildfire.
