Everything from
an Elise to a
Discovery, via a
911, but no room
for an MPV

demand to stay strong.
Les McNee

The focus among seven-seat buyers
has shifted to SUVs, but you’re right
to identify the S-Max in particular as
an MPV that transcends its genre. BM

In general, I agree with the February
Letter of the Month regarding electron-
ic parking brakes. My 987 Boxster had a
very disappointing hill-holder function.
Maybe it’s because I’ve spent most of
my life in very hilly surroundings, but
the fact that Porsche felt its owners
were incapable of starting on any sort of
incline without a nanny was insulting.
The hill-holder was so slow to
disengage that I always expected to be
hit from behind by some yahoo who hit
the gas the instant my brake lights went
off. It seemed like an eternity before the
car would allow me to move.
My new six-speed 718 Cayman S
still has this feature along with the
electronic parking brake, but, appar-
ently because the two features could
now be combined into the same control
software, the hill-holder releases the
instant any of the three pedals moves so
that I’m not stuck waiting for the car to
allow me to go.
Now, if only they could get it to
engage as quickly as it releases...
John Tuleibitz

Fear not
After all your huffing and puffing about
the vulgarity of the latest breed of big
SUVs and crossovers, I could barely
believe how inoffensive the Audi Q8
looked when I finally saw one on the

road. Admittedly it was in black – often
a colour chosen to hide a dodgy design

  • but even so it didn’t look at all out of
place on the A1, and all the elements
    seemed to be in proportion.
Will the BMW X7 (and indeed the
7-series) also turn out to be rather less
terrifying than you’d led me to believe?
    The Lamborghini Urus, on the
other hand, surely will be rather more
striking than the stealth-black one you
featured in your March Giant Test,
won’t it? Not that I’m expecting to see a
Urus on the road any time soon.
    Hugo Rice
