Handwoven – September 2019

(lily) #1

Wrap the main color around the outside of the pins 2
times to weave the fi rst 5 rows, leaving a tail to tie to
the horizontal stripe color. Wrap the horizontal stripe color
around the outside of the pins 2½ times for the stripe color.
Weave 6 rows with a tail at both ends to tie to the main color.
Wrap the main color around the outside of the pins 2½ times
to fi nish weaving the square. Tie the color-changing tails
together to make the loops you will need when sewing the
squares together.

RED PLAID SQUARES
The red plaid squares are woven using only the Red Black
Plaid yarn that transitions from red to black to gray. Always
begin with the same color at the starting corner to get the
stripes to line up from square to square. Deborah started all of
the plaid squares at the point in the variegated yarn where red

turns into black, leaving the red as the tail and positioning
black at the start of the warp. There will be some yarn waste
as a result of making all the squares look similar.

NOTE: If you are substituting another variegated yarn for the plaid
squares, look for yarns that have colors that stay in the same order.
For instance, if the yarn has three colors, then colors 1, 2, and 3
should continue in that order for the entire skein: color 1, color 2,
color 3, color 1, color 2, color 3, and so on.
Color length is also important. Each color should be the same
length every time it appears in the skein, and the colors should
be 8–24" long to create prominent striping.
