On a Medieval Day: Story Voyages
Around the World by Rona
Arato (Maple Tree, 2010,
http://www.owlkids.com) is unique
in that it focuses not just on
European cultures but on
cultures from Japan to Mali.
Each of the nine tales centers
on a youth, age 12 to 14,
and how he/she interacted
with neighbors, officials, and
difficulties. Really interesting.

Cleopatra and Ancient Egypt for
Kids: Her Life and World, with
21 Activities by Simonetta
Carr (2018, Chicago Review,
http://www.chicagoreviewpress.
com) offers a great historical
overview of the period,
accompanied by interesting
sidebars (Egyptian Art,
for example) and projects
(mummify a hot dog, for
example). Included as well
are a glossary, time line,
and current and recent
research.

The Wisdom of the Middle
Ages by Michael K. Kellogg
(Prometheus, 2016, http://www.
prometheusbooks.com)
offers an insightful, well-
researched, and engaging
view of this period in
European history that
led to the Renaissance
and much of the Western
thought today.

Oxford Roald Dahl Dictionary, (Oxford, 2018,
http://www.oup.com/us) will have anyone who opens
it smiling at just the first glance! A great
way to interest readers (of most any age) in
words! “Did You Know?” tidbits, delightful
illustrations, cross-references to where each
entry appears in Dahl’s works, and colorful
letter and page markers spice up each page.
Enjoy!
