wigs. We can see images of

this over and over again in their sculptures
and paintings. Actual examples of wigs have
survived and been recovered in tombs. Very
often, the ancient Egyptians cut their real
hair short because of the hot weather.
Additionally, in ancient societies, head lice
were common. For this reason, the Egyptians
saw long hair as impractical. For fancy or
ritual events, such as parties or ceremonies,
wigs were worn. These were often elaborately
braided or styled, sometimes with beads or
other ornaments. The best wigs were made
of human hair, but cheaper versions could be

They were sewn together in much the same
fashion as wigs are today.
