RADWOOD COMING TO GOODWOOD

A revival-type event for the ’80s and ’90s comes to the UK

he Goodwood Revival is one of the
great British classic car events. Not
only do you get to see vintage and
classic racing cars worth many millions hard
at it on the racetrack, but the entire circuit is
transformed back to the 1920s-1960s, with
punters and mechanics dressing up in
vintage garb. It’s become so popular that big
brands like Tesco have built retro-thremed
shoppingcentresfor someevents.

Previous events have seen a vast variety
of cars on display – you really can see a
Lamborghini Countach next to a Subaru
Brat, while tuned BMW E30s share space
wi th Honda Integra Type Rs. Previous events
ha ve seen Dodge Rams alongside aircooled
91 1s, and everything in between.

JIM RANDLE,

1938-

Professor Jim Randle,
the engineering genius
behind the XJ40 and
XJ220, died on 6 July at
the age of 81. His name is
perhaps most associated with the
XJ40 saloon, launched in 1986,
although the Randle-instigated
Saturday Club skunkworks conjured
up many concepts in the 1980s,
including the XJ220 supercar, star of
1988’s Birmingham Motor Show.
Randle had moved to Volvo by the
time the XJ220 entered production
in 1992. He later entered academia
but continued to work as a
consultant to various marques.

Astonsof Elegance
Fancy a rare chance to gawp at some
super-exclusive Aston Martins? The
Concours of Elegance, held at Hampton
Court between 6-8 September, will
feature (among others) a 1985 Aston
Martin V8 Vantage X-Pack, one of just 131
built. High-compression Cosworth
pistons, a larger intake manifold, new
Weber carburettors and redesigned
cylinder heads gave it Ferrari 288
GTO-rivalling speed. The event also sees
a line-up of Aston Martin Zagatos from
the 1960s right up to the present day.

Patrese 1992 Williams

Goodwood Festival of
Speed sale on 5 July
for £2,703,000 – a
record for a Williams
race car. More details

‘YOU REALLY CAN SEE

A COUNTACH NEXT

TO A SUBARU BRAT’

The UK event promises to be a lot of fun

  • though it will be very interesting to see how
the organisers capture the essence of British
    1980s and 1990s culture. We’re expecting
enough stonewashed denim to give Jon Bon
Jovi a sweat, and lots of Back To The Future
references, but that’s the US, not the UK. We
have the answer: Modern Classics will be
there, and Nathan’s threatening to turn up in
a shellsuit with a mulleted JJ. Now, if that’s
not an incentive to visit, what is?
