The drive back up to Modern Classics HQ
in Peterborough went without a hitch,
though it reminded me what driving a three-
and-a-half-decade old Volkswagen is all
about. Mainly, huffing and puffing. No power
steering and wider than stock tyres mean
parking provides a decent bicep workout. At
speed it’s a giggle though. It feels light and
nimble and every bit as entertaining as the
MkI Golf GTI upon which it’s based, and
that’s before I catch a glimpse of it in a shop

granted a full bill of health from MoT man.
Coinciding collection of the Scirocco with
picking up Nathan’s Alfa 156 (just down the
road at FCA) I once again found myself
behind the wheel of my Storm. To say I was
pleased was an understatement. ‘It just
needs to be driven now’ recommended
John. He didn’t have to tell me twice.
So far my Scirocco ownership experience
has been a real challenge. Now John and the
VRT boys have an insight too. Thankfully the
team are well used to bringing old Dubs
back to life and yet they’re equally talented
at tweaking more modern classics as well.
VRT technicians are just as happy getting to


window and swoon. Let’s just hope it
behaves itself long enough for me to finally
fall for it properly. After all, there’s little left
on it now that hasn’t been replaced. JJ
