WewereallwonderinghowtheDeltaDieselentrywouldspoolconsideringitsmammothturbosthroughthegrille,butit actuallygotlitandgotmovingtothetuneofa 6.18.

SnyderPerformanceEngineering’sFordis alwaysoneofthebest-lookingtrucksoutthere,
andthisyeartheydidwellatthedragstriptoo,clickingoffa 6.63-secondrun.

Asthedynoeventprogressed,therewerea numberof
interestingstoriesbetween11thand16thplace.Shawn
Ellertonfinished16thwithhis6.0L-poweredForddespite
grenadingtheengineonthedynowithmorethan1,900lb-ft
oftorque.EricMerchantfinishedin 12thwitha strong1,395
hpand2,294lb-ft,butoddlyspunonthedynowhenthey
triedtoaddnitrous—oneoftheonlytruckstodoso.From
tractionproblemstoboostproblems,KodiKochlandedin
15thwitha 1,566hpnumber,butonly1,785lb-ftasthey
nevergotthebigturboquitelit.

Thebiggeststoryonthedyno(andperhapsthewholeevent)
involvedTonyBurkhardtandhis“LastMinuteHooker.”Tony
wasa favoritecomingintotheevent,butputtingfive
stagesofnitrousona bigsingleturboturnedouttobea
badidea.Verybad.Theturboexplodedina hugefireball,
andwhenit didtheshrapneltookouta fuelrailandputa
quarter-sizedholeintheairintake.Withthefuelpressure
controlleralsotakenout,theenginewenttofullfuel
pressureandtheDuramaxstartedtorunaway—whileit
wasstillonfire!DriverMarkBroviakhadthepresence
ofmindtotryandstopthetruckwiththebrakesbefore
