FOOTBALL
ILLUSRATORS

DAn LEYDOn

Who do you support?
I support Liverpool. Since Jurgen Klopp
arrived, it’s been the most fun ever.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve done?
The one where everything went right
for me was for New Balance, just before
Liverpool beat Bayern Munich in March.
Between myself and the team at ZAK,
we came up with two players who went
on to score. Then, to add more grit and
texture to the piece, we added in rain.
There were near identical scenes in the
game to what was drawn beforehand.
A delicious fluke.

work you’ve done?
I loved having the chance to work with
Chelsea last season.

DAnIEL nYARI

Who do you support?
I’m Romanian-born, and now reside
in New York. Growing up and moving
between cities, I never formed a strong
bond with any one particular team. For
me, watching football is like watching
hundreds of different movies with an
infinite set of storylines and characters.
Who’s your favourite player?
Elegant players such as Francesco Totti,
Dennis Bergkamp and Dimitar Berbatov.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
Always the most recent one, in this case
a Graham Paddon portrait for Norwich.
How did you first get into football
illustration?
I was born into an Eastern European
family where football was on TV all the
time. When I wasn’t outside playing,
I was inside copying Panini stickers and
football cards. It wasn’t until I was on
social media that I became aware of
a burgeoning digital football culture.
I also became aware of just how much
potential it had in the North American
market, and because of my lifelong
involvement with the sport I believed
I could play a part in it. Football always
felt like an advantage.
