What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
I still adore my Socrates Icon painting.
There are others I like from that series,
such as Andrea Pirlo. My work is strictly
analogue – I use oil paint, wood panels
and cardboard. Sometimes I do collages
for illustrations, but it’s never digital.

What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
My portrait of Cristiano Ronaldo with
the European Cup. I’m Portuguese and
this was a huge moment in my life.

work you’ve done?
Creating illustrations for the Bundesliga.

What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve produced?
You’re only as good as your last piece of
work, and I recently had the pleasure of
creating an 8ft mural celebrating Pele
for the new flagship ‘Pele World Soccer’
store in Times Square, New York.

Who do you support?
I’m a massive fan of future National
League champions Hartlepool United.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
I had this idea for a design that featured
every shirt from every World Cup from
1930 through to 2018. What could go
wrong? Six months and 457 tops later,
with my sanity in tatters, I just scraped
the print deadline thanks to some very
late kit releases (looking at you, Morocco
and Iran). But the completed illustration
is without a doubt the design I’m most
proud of. It’s my Sistine Chapel. It’s all
that is brilliant and questionable about
football shirts through the years.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve done?
I was commissioned to design a T-shirt
for Ajax’s Dutch Cup final appearance.
What an experience to see 18,000 tops
with my design on laid out to greet the
fans on arrival at the game.
