FOOTBALL
ILLUSRATORS
PHIL GALLOWAY
Who do you support?
I support Liverpool, which I’m always
very proud to say but particularly so
after last season!
Who’s your favourite player?
Xabi Alonso. He oozed class and cool
wherever he played all over the pitch.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work you’ve done?
This year, I received a commission and
had to pinch myself to check it was real.
I was asked by the FA to do a series of
illustrations which would feature in this
year’s FA Cup final programme between
Watford and Man City, along with the
winners’ illustration for the official FA
social media channels. The teenage boy
in me who grew up on a diet of Spice
Boys white suits and Abide With Me was
over the moon, and the response to the
work was overwhelming. I also received
a message from Raheem Sterling and
the City team afterwards.

ALEX BEnnETT
Who do you support?
I support Watford. My dad first took me
to Vicarage Road when I was five. Since
that afternoon in 1986, I’ve thought of
little else besides football!
Who’s your favourite player?
Growing up, Paul Gascoigne after Italia
- Being completely unbiased, I would
currently say Troy Deeney. He’s a unique
character, something the game lacks.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
I did Football Mishmash – The History of
Football in One Image in 2013. This was
my first, detailed, large-scale illustration.
It took me nearly 14 months to finish,
but it was certainly worthwhile as I’m
currently selling its third edition. It has
also led to me creating similar pieces
for several clubs including Spurs, West
Ham, Everton and Watford. Let me know
if your club wants one – I’m more than
happy to make more!
What’s the best piece of commercial
work that you’ve done?
Probably the illustration I’ve just spent
the last seven months on – 125 Years of
Manchester City in One Image. Not only
because it was for such a big club, but
because I felt I did quite well in bringing
together the contrasting fortunes of the
club over the years.
