FOOTBALL
ILLUSRATORS

MATHEUS TOSCAnO

AKA 8BITFOOTBALL

Who do you support?
I try to stay as neutral as I can with my
drawings, but I support Atletico-MG in
my native Brazil.
Who’s your favourite player?
Ronaldinho. Skilful and always smiling.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
The scorpion-kick save by Rene Higuita.
That is a timeless piece! The FIFA 2018
release commercial shows an animation
that I made of Ronaldo. That was really
nice for me because I have been playing
FIFA since I was a small boy.

THE GRAPHIC BOMB

Who do you support?
Luton Town and Forest Green Rovers.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
Probably the Liverpool vs Plymouth FA
Cup programme cover. It’s not our best
work and we only had a couple of hours
to do it, but all the fans loved it and that
meant so much to us.
What’s the best piece of commercial
work that you’ve done?
Possibly an illustration of the Gwladys
Street End at Goodison Park.

JOSH FREnCH

Who do you support?
I’m a Millwall fan. My dad has followed
them since he was a boy, and I’ve been
a season ticket holder for over 10 years.
Who’s your favourite player?
Tim Cahill, for his work ethic, tenacious
attitude, and being a very good player.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
My recent favourites would be the work
I did for England, Jadon Sancho for the
Bundesliga and Kylian Mbappe for Match
of the Day Magazine. There’s no greater
honour as an illustrator in the football
industry than being asked to do artwork
for England, so I’m immensely proud.

PAUL TREVILLIOn AKA

YOU ARE THE REF

Who do you support?
Tottenham. I attended my first match
in 1937 when Spurs played Everton, and
got my first close-up view of Toffees
legend Dixie Dean. He became my hero
and 20 years later I had the honour of
being asked to capture his life story for
the Liverpool Echo.
How did you first get into football
illustration?
I went to school just a corner-kick from
White Hart Lane. Today I can hardly read
or spell and have never quite mastered
joined-up writing, because I spent most
of my time watching Spurs training. So,
it was Bill Nicholson and Alf Ramsey who
became my teachers, and my drawings
of Spurs’ players started appearing in
The Lilywhite, the official Tottenham
supporters’ magazine. I did a drawing
of Ramsey heading a ball, and he asked
me to bring it along on my next visit.
I expected Alf to sign it – instead he
tore it up saying, “The higher the ball
is in the air, the lower the standard of
play. If you ever draw me again, have
the ball at my feet!” Nicholson always
said that I could draw better.
What’s your favourite football
illustration from your own work?
‘The Magic of Messi’, published by the
Daily Mail in 2011.
Who’s your favourite player?
My love of centre-forwards that was
instilled by Dixie Dean means that Harry
Kane is my hero now. But my all-time
favourite Tottenham players are Paul
Gascoigne and Gary Lineker.
