Then he re-corded “Saved,” a melancholy “onethat got away” ballad inspired by thegirlfriend he had left behind in NewYork, in a garage studio in El Paso.Like “Location,” the song gestures tolove and dating and the digital detri-tus of an expired relationship. (“ButI’ll keep your number saved/’Cause Ihope one day you’ll get the sense to callme,” Khalid sings.) “I would hear himsinging in the bathroom—very, very, very loudly,” Wolfe tells me, “but I hadno idea he was writing songs, that hehad that capability, until he let me hear‘Saved.’” Wolfe was loored. “I had alazy son, you hear me? He was lazy.”The summer after graduation,Khalid tossed his clothes into a plas-tic tub and drove out to L.A. to inishrecording what would become his de-but album, American Teen, released inMarch 2017. Perhaps unsurprising for``````someone with such a peripatetic child-hood, he’s been on tour pretty muchconstantly since.Touring has helped Khalid shedsome anxiety about performing. Thetrick, for him, is to look at every mem-ber of the audience and to try to makea connection—the perennial new-kidstance. A now-famous clip shows himjumping ofstage while performing inManchester, England, to hug a tearfullittle girl who was singing along to hislyrics.“I just had to show her apprecia-tion,” he says. But Khalid admits that he’s a “com-pletely diferent person” when he’s notin front of a crowd. “I like people tolook at me as a regular guy who’s justinvolved in a super-rare job that kicksass.” And ofstage, he is beginning toput down roots. Recently he boughta four-bedroom house in L.A., andit’s clear that part of the appeal is thatit’s a home for his guests as well. Atany given time, he says, he has about``````three friends—from El Paso or evenGermany—staying with him; morecrash on the sofas. He has installeda video projector and a sound sys-tem to entertain them with. “I don’tknow how to dance,” he claims. “ButI’m learning.” During an upcomingbreak, he’s planned a trip to Dubai,Tokyo, and Greece for his friends andbackup dancers. When we last spoke,he’d recently added a nine-week-oldpuppy—a cocker spaniel–dachshundmix named Maui—to the household.“She’s in tour-training mode rightnow,” he tells me. She’s “gonna be alittle monster.”The house itself he’s filled with re-minders of El Paso—a mirror markedwith the city’s area code—as well assome things that underline how far he’scome: clothing by Helmut Lang, Guc-ci, Comme des Garçons, Balenciaga,Cobra S.C., and Adaptation. Almostevery shoe in his tour closet, he tells me,is made by Nike, except for Balenciaga
